ep 18 - Hebrews 2:3-4 | The Great Salvation We Cannot Afford to Neglect

We are back in Hebrews chapter 2 picking up right where we left off — and this passage is still swinging. Today we are finishing verse 3 and working through verse 4, and what we find here is both a warning and an invitation. The warning: do not neglect this great salvation. The invitation: look at the evidence God has given you that it is real — the signs, the wonders, the miracles, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and 2,000 years of a gospel that has only grown stronger. That is not coincidence. That is God bearing witness.

Shorter episode today — and that is okay. We are not rushing through Hebrews. We are sitting in it.

(Episode 4 — Hebrews 2:1-3a)

Last week we covered the first half of this passage and focused on the word drift — that quiet, accidental, unintentional movement away from the dock that happens when we are not paying much closer attention. We talked about what it means to be anchored versus what it means to drift, and how the same waves of everyday life that should be manageable can pull us miles from where we were supposed to be if we are not holding fast to Jesus Christ.

THE PASSAGE

Hebrews 2:1-4 ESV

"Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will."

UNPACKING THE PASSAGE

"How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?" — Hebrews 2:3

We picked up here from last week. Under the old covenant there was an entire system of holiness that the people of Israel had to maintain — laws to keep, a sacrificial system, daily and annual offerings made on behalf of the people to atone for sin. All of this was the process by which they sought right standing before God.

And even then — it was never fully enough. The law was not given to justify us. As we will see later in Hebrews 11, even those under the law were declared righteous because of their faith — not their works. The law revealed the standard. It also revealed that we could never meet it.

"Jesus did all of the work that we would have had to do in order to be made right — and even then it would not have sufficed because we were not enough to actually satiate the wrath of God."

But here in the new covenant — Jesus lived the life we could not live. He died the death we should have died. He suffered the sufferings we should have suffered. And we have been given a great salvation. We get to share in the inheritance without having to do anything but place our faith in Jesus Christ and do as He commanded — love God with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love others as ourselves. In this, all the other laws are fulfilled.

So the author's question is not a rhetorical trap. It is a genuine warning anchored in love: if you have been given something this extraordinary — something that the Israelites under the old covenant never had — how could you possibly neglect it? And if you neglect it, how shall you escape the consequences of that drift?

"It was declared at first by the Lord, and attested to us by those who heard." — Hebrews 2:3b

This phrase is also one of the reasons scholars have a hard time attributing Hebrews to Paul. Paul never shied away from declaring that his gospel was received directly from Jesus Himself — that direct discipleship was the very thing that made him an apostle. But here the author places himself among those who received the message secondhand — attested to us by those who heard. That language suggests he was not one of the original hearers. Another quiet clue that the authorship question remains open until we get to heaven.

What matters theologically is this: the word we have was declared first by the Lord. Then it was attested — confirmed and verified — by the people who were there. The disciples. The early church. The ones who saw what Jesus did and refused to stop talking about it even under threat of arrest and death.

"How many times did the disciples ask Jesus, 'To whom shall we go if we leave?' There were a lot of things that Jesus did that might've been confusing — he spoke with such authority, such eloquence, in parables where some people left— and yet the disciples stayed."

The word has a witness trail. First the Lord declared it. Then eyewitnesses attested it. Then God confirmed it.

"God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will." — Hebrews 2:4

Three layers of confirmation — and they build on each other:

Layer 1 — The Signs and Wonders of Jesus
Every miracle Jesus performed was God bearing witness to His own Son. When Jesus healed the paralyzed man lowered through the ceiling by his friends — He did something only God could do. He first said "Your sins are forgiven" — something the Pharisees immediately recognized as a claim only God could make. And then, knowing what they were thinking in their hearts, He said: "But so that you know that God is the one who sent me" — and told the man to pick up his mat and walk.

The people did not worship Jesus in that moment. They lifted their hands to heaven and gave God praise. And that is exactly the point — the signs and wonders of Jesus were not just impressive. They were God the Father bearing witness to God the Son.

Layer 2 — The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
After the resurrection and ascension, God continued to bear witness through the gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed to the early church. Pentecost. Three thousand people coming to Christ in a single day after Peter preaches under the anointing of the Spirit. Signs and wonders continuing through the apostles in the book of Acts.

Layer 3 — 2,000 Years of a Gospel That Has Only Grown Stronger
There is a moment in Acts — a Pharisee addressing the council that is trying to figure out how to stop the disciples — who essentially says: if we arrest or kill them and God is not behind this, their followers will scatter just like all the others before them. But if God is behind this, we do not want to find ourselves standing against God.

He was, unknowingly, prophesying.

"We are now 2,000 years post all of that. And what can we see about Christianity? What can we see about the gospel message of Jesus Christ? It has not only grown stronger in number, but it's grown stronger in strength. That alone attests to God."

No human movement survives 2,000 years of persecution, cultural opposition, and attempted suppression and emerges stronger. That is not strategy. That is the Holy Spirit.

THE CLOSING WORD

"The waves will come — and that's just the fact of life. The waves will come and sometimes the water ripples just right where it would cause the boat to drift. So if you are anchored, hold fast to the hem of Jesus Christ. If you're holding on by a thread — make sure that thread is fastened tightly to the hem of Jesus Christ's robe."

3 THINGS TO WALK AWAY WITH

1. You have been given something the Israelites never had.
The old covenant required a system of law and sacrifice that could never fully satisfy. Jesus fulfilled it completely. You wear His righteousness. You share in His inheritance. That is the great salvation — and it is too extraordinary to neglect.

2. God did not just declare the gospel — He confirmed it.
Signs and wonders. Miracles. The gifts of the Holy Spirit. The early church. Three thousand converts in one day. Two thousand years of a gospel that has only grown stronger. God has been bearing witness all along. The evidence is overwhelming.

3. Holding on by a thread is still holding on — just make sure the thread is tied to Jesus.
Some seasons that is all we have. And that is okay. Just make sure the thread is fastened to the hem of His robe. An anchor does not require strength from the boat. It just requires connection to something that holds.

APPLICATION FOR ANCHORED WIVES AND MOMS

You have been given a great salvation. Not a set of rules to keep perfectly. Not a system to maintain. A Person to hold onto. And on the days when it feels like you are barely holding on — remember that the same God who bore witness through signs and wonders in the first century is the same God who is bearing witness in your life right now. The signs and wonders in your own story are Ebenezers. Do not forget them. Write them down. Send them in a letter to a sister who needs to remember too.
